Description:

The Plastibell Circumcision Device is a clear plastic ring with handle designed for male neonatal circumcision that has a deep groove running circumferentially. The adhesions between glans and foreskin are divided with a probe. Then the foreskin is cut longitudinally to allow it to be retracted and the glans (the head of penis) to be exposed.

Description:

Why do/did you have foreskin? The foreskin occupies a prominent position on an important organ. The foreskins location and structure indicate that it is the most important sensory tissue of the penis. Its persistence over millions of years suggests that it has played a role in the propagation of the species.A well-integrated organStructurally, the penis is highly integrated. The glans, foreskin and skin of the penile shaft function as a single unit, not as a collection of separate parts with entirely different functions. The functions of the glans and foreskin are similar, and overlapping, but come fully into their own at different times during intercourse.Simple sensationsThe outer surface of the foreskin is specialized to detect feather-light touch and other sensations, including painful ones. The infamous zipper injury is an extreme example of the sort of damage the outer skin was designed to detect and prevent, long before the zipper posed a threat to the uninitiated.Compared with the true (outer) skin of the foreskin, the glans is only feebly sensitive to light touch, pain, heat and cold. This is part of the reason we call the foreskin the primary sensory tissue of the penis. Without the foreskin, the end of the penis is numb to a host of sensations that tell the owner whether one of his most prized organs is in good company, or should move to safety.Complex sensationsThanks to its ridged band, the inner lining of the foreskin is specialized sexual tissue. The ridged band readily expands and contracts and is obviously designed to detect stretching forces. When penile shaft skin tugs on the ridged band, special genital corpuscles in the peaks of the ridges detect movement and trigger ejaculation. Stretching of the ridged band may also trigger and sustain erection.Electrical stimulation of the glans triggers nerve impulses that pass to the spinal cord and then to the muscle of ejaculation. Clearly the glans has much in common with the foreskin. Where foreskin and glans part company, functionally as well as physically, is in their sensitivity to light touch, pain and heat and cold. Contrary to common opinion, the glans is not highly sensitive to a broad range of stimuli.Foreskin vs. glansIt is unclear whether the ridged band simply plays backup for the glans, or whether the two have different functions. The location of the retracted ridged band on the erect penile shaft suggests that the difference is one of timing. Possibly, the foreskin and its ridged band are designed to ensure that sexual reflexes are triggered when, and only when, these structures are stretched during intercourse. The biological importance of the ridged band to conception is self-evident, but there is still a major gap in our understanding of the relation between form and function of the penis.Dartos musclePenile skin has two important characteristics, apparent only on erection. Firstly penile skin tenses, stiffens and shortens, firming up the connection between shaft skin and ridged band. This change allows for the transmission of movement from the base of the erect penis to the ridged band.Secondly, penile skin undergoes a marked frictional change, brought about by stiff, forward-pointing skin folds. The mechanism is similar to that which raises goosebumps. The changes in penile skin are brought about by contraction of the Dartos muscle. Between them, stiffening and frictionality ensure that the ridged band is instantly alerted to changes in position of the penis within the vagina. Why two layers? The double-layering of the foreskin allows the delicate ridged band, which normally is safely hidden from view, to be deployed on the upper surface of the penile shaft during erection. There it stands a better chance of being activated. Double-layering also eases vaginal entry by offsetting the frictional resistance of erect shaft skin.SummaryThe various parts of the penis, including the foreskin, form a functional whole. The foreskin is the primary sensory tissue of the penis. The ridged band of the foreskin is built to trigger orgasm and ejaculation.

Surgical Photos Slideshow: Infant Circumcision

Description:

Shown are photos of the actual surgery done to babies, and the tools and restraints used in Gomco, Mogen and Plastibell infant circumcisions. If you were born in a USA hospital, then there is a good chance this happened to you. Today, most Americans think of circumcision as natural procedure for male babies. Neonatal circumcision is the most common operation carried out in the U.S. today. Nationally, rates are as high as 60%, down from a peak of 75% in the 1970s. But when compared to the rest of the English speaking world, America is unique. Great Britain, Canada and Australia have current rates of male circumcision at about 15%, whereas New Zealand is lower than 5%. In the US, the rate differs by regionally, with high rates of circumcision in the white South, but low circumcision rates among babies of Hispanic origin. Most of the rest of the Western world has retained the abhorrence of male circumcision that has existed in Europe since the time of the ancient Greeks (and as noted in the last post, some in 18th century England feared Jewish emancipation meant universal circumcision!). What happened in the US that made the procedure so popular? There are a number of reasons that brough circumcision to prominence in America in the early 20th century.1. Stop Masturbation! Advocates were aided by the puritanical moral sentiment of the day, as circumcision was promoted as a way to discourage masturbation. (Modern surveys have actually shown the opposite to be true.)2. Circumcision as a cure for maladies. In 1870, Dr. Lewis Sayre of New York (and vice president of the newly-formed American Medical Association), examined a boy who was unable to straighten his legs and whose condition had so far defied regular treatment. Upon noting that the boys genitals were inflamed, Sayre hypothesized that chronic irritation of the boys foreskin had paralyzed his knees via reflex neurosis. Sayre circumcised the boy, and within a few weeks he recovered from his paralysis. After additional positive results, Sayre began to promote circumcision as an orthopedic remedy, and his prominence within the medical profession and the newly formed AMA allowed him to reach a wide audience. Over the next decades, the list of ailments reputed to be treatable through circumcision grew to include hernia, bladder infections, kidney stones, insomnia, rheumatism, epilepsy, asthma, erectile dysfunction, syphilis, insanity, and a handful of other syndromes.3. Hospitals. Compounded by cause no. 1, as hospitals proliferated in urban areas, more children were under the care of physicians in hospitals rather than with midwives in the home. Some historians have even theorized that circumcision became a class marker of those wealthy enough to afford a hospital birth.4. Easier Surgical Procedures. The discovery in 1885 of hypodermic cocaine as a local anaesthetic made it easier for doctors without expertise in the use of chloroform to perform minor surgeries. Several mechanically-aided circumcision techniques, forerunners of modern clamp-based circumcision methods, were first published in the medical literature of the 1890s, allowing surgeons to perform circumcisions more safely and successfully.Circumcision was at a statistical height of about 75% of the country from 1950 to 1970. Today it is becoming less popular, partially because of high numbers of Hispanic immigrants, and growing opposition in the more progressive northeast and west (it remains overwhelmingly common in the South). Today, the major medical societies in the USA do not recommend routine non-therapeutic infant circumcision. This has long also been the case in the rest of the English speaking world, which has never seen circumcision rates as high as the United States.

Description:

Some Historical American Female Circumcision medical papers: http://www.historyofcircumcision.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=68Like its male counterpart, circumcision of females has two histories. First it is a ritual or customary practice among tribal societies (mostly in Africa) and some Islamic communities. Secondly it is a medical intervention, justified by Victorian (and, in the USA, some twentieth century) doctors in exactly the same way as they rationalised circumcision of boys: to deter masturbation, to treat obscure nervous disorders such as hysteria, neurasthenia and epilepsy, and thereby to promote health.MGM and FGMGiven the similarities between the male and female genitals, the nature of the surgery and the justifications offered, it is surprising that male and female circumcision enjoy such strikingly different reputations, at least in Anglophone societies: the first, a mild and harmless adjustment which should be tolerated, if not actively promoted; the second, a cruel abomination which must be stopped by law, no matter how culturally significant to its practitioners. If you call circumcision of boys male genital mutilation, you are accused of emotionalism; if you fail to call circumcision of women or girls female genital mutilation you are accused of trivialising the offence. While the United Nations, Amnesty International and other international agencies spend millions on programs to eradicate FGM, they have never uttered a word against circumcision of boys.It might be thought that the reason for this double standard lies in the greater physical severity of female circumcision, but this is to confuse cause with effect. On the contrary, it is the tolerant or positive attitude towards male circumcision and the rarity of female circumcision in western societies which promote the illusion that the operation is necessarily more sexually disabling, and without benefit to health, when performed on girls or women. It is, of course, also true that the term female circumcision is vague, referring to any one or more of a number of surgical procedures. These have been defined by the World Health Organisation as follows:Female Genital Mutilation comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of female external genitalia and/or injury to the female genital organs for cultural or any other non-therapeutic reason.ClassificationType 1: Excision of the prepuce with or without excision of part or all of the clitorisType 2: Excision of the clitoris together with partial or total excision of the labia minoraType 3: Excision of part or all of the external genitalia and stitching/narrowing of the vaginal opening (infibulation)Type 4: Unclassified (but may include): * pricking, piercing or incision of the clitoris and/or labia; * stretching of the clitoris and/or labia; * cauterization by burning of the clitoris and surrounding tissue; * introcision; * scraping (angurya cuts) or cutting (gishri cuts) of the vagina or surrounding tissue; * introduction of corrosive substances or herbs into the vagina; * any other procedure that falls under the definition of female genital mutilation given above.

Description:

The Foreskin of the penis is a complex structure composed of inner (mucosal) skin, outer (shaft) skin, and numerous specialized nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. The frenulum, which is on the underside of the glans, is a web of skin that is similar to what connects your tongue to the floor of your mouth. This may have been be anywhere from fully intact to completely removed depending on how you where circumcised. This cannot be restored, however both inner and outer skin can be regrown.Book Available here: http://www.norm.org/joy.html

Description:

As the Massachusetts legislature reviews the MGM Bill to outlaw all non-therapeutic genital cutting, I'd like the lawmakers to know that I very much resent the fact that a valuable sensual part of my healthy body was amputated without my consent. I am a man who is fully capable of making my own rational choices about which cosmetic amputations to endure, based on the evidence presently available. Yet I can't make the circumcision decision because someone made it for me, LONG before it was relevant to my life, while I was a healthy normal infant.
The only possible justification for cutting soon after birth would be to reduce risk of urinary tract infections (if conflicting data can be trusted at all) in the first year of life, yet girls get more UTI than any group of boys and we treat those cases with antibiotics, never looking for something to amputate. Most of the world does not circumcise, and where caregivers know how to treat an infant's foreskin the UTI "advantage" is not observed.

I would certainly never elect circumcision as a means of disease prevention. For one thing, I know that most of the US men who have died of AIDS were circumcised at birth, so whatever circumcision's effect, I must still use safer sex practices every time. Secondly, the foreskin is so nerve laden and so valuable for normal sexual stimulation that I wouldn't want to live without it unnecessarily.

To undo some of the damage of circumcision I have endured a tedious multi-year process of non-surgical foreskin restoration through tensile tissue expansion, and I can say with authority that foreskin feels REALLY good. The slinky slack skin gives my wife something to manipulate and some exciting new options for oral stimulation, and the glans and adjacent mucosa just sparkle with pleasure-receptivity now that they are protected from the drying and abrasive effects of clothing and air. I can only speculate how much better sex could have been with all my original equipment, but scientific evidence shows that the parts I am missing would be the MOST fine-touch sensitive parts of my penis (see Sorrells et al) today, and the roughly 15 square inches of exquisite sexual interface would include half of the sensual nerve endings in my genitals (see Taylor).

Further, the known risks and unplanned harms of infant circumcision far outweigh any conceivable supposed benefit. I've seen photos of adult penises with jagged irregular scars, painful bulgy truncated veins, skin bridges, pits and gouges to the glans, stitch tunnels, meatal stenosis scars, buried penis, coarse hair growing all the way to the scar line, horrific malopposition of the shaft and glans, curved erection due to tight skin, and the list goes on and on.

The frequencies of these effects are not known, but these are NOT rare and should surprise no one. Cutting a tiny infant and then leaving it to heal haphazardly in a fouled diaper under the care of lay people is a far-from-ideal way to perform cosmetic surgery. Imagine trying to do a breast augmentation on an infant girl. The surgeon would have no idea how to proceed since nothing could be known about how the breasts or the body would eventually grow, and even if the correct procedure could be somehow divined, any tiny error in cutting would be magnified as the patient grew. Most importantly the OWNER of the body is not able to express her preference. Cutting a baby boy's penis is EXACTLY as absurd.

Boys deserve equal protection under the law (see the 14th amendment) from non-therapeutic and ill-advised cosmetic surgeries. All citizens have the basic human right to enjoy their whole intact bodies. No doctor is obligated to perform risky surgery - on someone who is well - just because someone else requests it. Girls are protected by federal law from even a pin-poke to draw one ceremonial drop of blood, with NO religious exemption. Massachusetts law must protect boys too.

Description:

Circumcision is fast fading into history as people come to realise the cruel and barbaric practice that it is. For many men it's too late. Fortunately, there are options available to regrow one's foreskin. It can take several years and you never get the original back, but the results are quite natural looking and the normal gliding function and even some of the sensitivity returns. This is a re-post of the Foreskin Restoration video but with the rude bits blanked out after YouTube pulled the original.

Description:

"On a personal note, I hadn't done the research with my first son, but by the time my second son was born, I knew I didn't want him circumcised, but my husband insisted. Despite MANY discussions, (some heated) he would not change his mind. He didn't think it would be right to have one son circumcised. and the other one not, even though I tried to reason w/ him and point out the boys would not be comparing their penises. He also used the argument about uncircumcised penises not being as clean and hygienic, and his sons looking like him- again, do father and sons really compare them?I refused to sign the circumcised papers at the hospital and left it to him and I didn't go to either circumcision, but it just makes me cringe to think about both my boys even having shots there- I really can't even think about this too much, b/c it makes me SO upset. It is the one point that my husband and I argued over more than anything w/ all the decisions you have to make. Sometimes I think I should have been stronger for my sons, and not finally given in, but after birth & pregnancy I was just too tired to fight about it anymore. Finally I am still really angry at my husband for doing this, and talk about irony- after son #2 was born, he was telling his parents that I didn't want the baby boy circumcised and he went on and on to his parents on about how hard it was to keep uncircumcised ones clean, etc., His father got up and left, and then his mom told him that his father was uncircumcised. My husband had no idea- so I guess that proves fathers and sons don't compare their penises. He felt awful about going on like that w/ his father, and THEN decided maybe I had valid points after all- Jeez... I just wish our sons didn't have to go through this b/c of his issues."Learn more here: http://www.lactivistintactivist.com/?page_id=3

Ethics of Routine Child Genital Cutting

Description:

His site: http://www.courtchallenge.com/It is becoming more and more apparent that routine circumcision of boys raises the same basic human rights issues as FGM. Two of our leading medical ethicists, Dr. Eike-Henner Kluge and Dr. Margaret Somerville, have warned that infant male circumcision presents serious ethical and legal difficulties. Dr. Kluge, a former Director of Ethics and Legal Affairs at the Canadian Medical Association, has characterized infant male circumcision as "non-consensual mutilation of a minor." Dr. Somerville, Founding Director of the McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law, has likened infant male circumcision to criminal assault.Evidence suggests that except in rare cases when it is performed in response to a specific medical need, male circumcision confers no net medical benefit and may harm the person who undergoes it. The Canadian Paediatric Society concluded in 1996, after an exhaustive review of the medical literature, that any potential benefit from neonatal circumcision does not outweigh the surgical risks associated with performing the procedure. Paediatric organizations in other countries, including the United States, have come to similar conclusions. The foreskin is an integral, normal part of the external genitals. It forms the anatomical covering of the glans penis and clitoris. One recent medical study concluded that the inner surface of the male foreskin may be "an important component of the overall sensory mechanism of the human penis" (Taylor, J. et al. The prepuce: specialized mucosa of the penis and its loss to circumcision. British Journal of Urology, 1996;77:291-5). It is clear that removing such anatomy from a healthy child raises important human rights issues.Relative degree of harm is not an appropriate criterion for distinguishing male circumcision from FGM. The milder forms of FGM are no more severe than male circumcision. In some traditions, female circumcision involves removing only the clitoral hood, while in other traditions, female circumcision involves nicking the genitals without removing any tissue whatsoever. Canadian law prohibits all forms of FGM, regardless of severity. If the milder forms of FGM cannot be excused on the grounds that they are less severe than male circumcision, then male circumcision cannot be excused on the grounds that it is less severe than the more extreme forms of FGM.Circumcision of boys for non-medical reasons is gender-specific discrimination—that is, boys are treated differently just because they are boys. Circumcision of girls for non-medical reasons is prohibited. The reasons commonly cited for male circumcision and female circumcision are identical: cleanliness, good appearance, conformity to societal values, preservation of cultural identity, potential health benefits. If these reasons are insufficient to justify circumcision of girls, they are insufficient to justify circumcision of boys.

Description:

Karen Glennon, mother of three whole and healthy children, shares her thoughts about genital integrity. Before the birth of her son, Karen moderated Mothering Magazine's online forum, The Case Against Circumcision:http://www.facebook.com/l/;www.mothering.com/discussions/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=44Why do/did you have foreskin?
Description:

After reviewing 40 years worth of medical studies, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force on Circumcision concluded that the "potential medical benefits of newborn male circumcision... are not sufficient to recommend routine neonatal circumcision." While this 1999 policy may be revised soon, it is still the current official recommendation for parents and doctors. This report is also the first time the AAP has acknowledged(after decades of doctors mindlessly repeating the belief that babies don't feel significant pain) that circumcision without anesthesia is traumatic and if circumcision is to be done, anesthesia should be used. Here are some highlights from the report:Role of Hygiene"there is little evidence to affirm the association between circumcision status and optimum penile hygiene."STDs including HIV"behavioral factors appear to be far more important than circumcision status."Penile Cancer"in a developed country such as the United States, penile cancer is a rare disease and the risk of penile cancer developing in an uncircumcised man, although increased compared with a circumcised man, is low."Urinary Tract Infections"breastfeeding was shown to have a threefold protective effect on the incidence of UTI in a sample of uncircumcised infants. However, breastfeeding status has not been evaluated systematically in studies assessing UTI and circumcision status." meaning that the earlier UTIs studies results were confounded. Even if their numbers were accurate, in order to prevent one UTI during the first year of life by circumcising a baby boy, approximately 195 babies who will not get a UTI would need to be circumcised. Also infant girls commonly develop UTIs(in some studies at even higher rates than infant boys) and the standard treatment for them is antibiotics which works just as well for infant boys with UTIs. The AAP concludes this section noting that "the absolute risk of developing a UTI in an uncircumcised male infant is low (at most, ~1%)".EthicsHere they say while even though cutting off part of your baby's genitalia "is not essential to the child's current well-being" they are perfectly fine with parents and doctors using cultural tradition as justification. The report does not mention whether they also think cultural tradition is an acceptable reason to anesthesize infant girls and then cut off their clitoral hoods(biologically analogous to foreskin) as is the case here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWvi475cYZY(the video is not particularly graphic as it was made by a mother who had her own clitoral hood cut off when she was a baby and she wants to continue the tradition)If you want, you can read the full AAP policy here: http://www.cirp.org/library/statements/aap1999/

Description:

"During my pregnancy, my husband and I would get into heated debates abour circ and always left me so angry because I cry when I get stressed out and can't ever win. When, last March we found out we were expecting our first son. We continued to argue over circ and I just gave up and said "whatever".Last June, we welcomed our little boy to the world. We had a beautiful birth at home, in the water, unassisted. My midwife came moments after the birth to check on us. Everything was as perfect as my LO. My husband insisted that I make the circ appt for a week later so I did. I was just too exhausted to argue. A few days later though, the videos of baby boys wailing in pain reminded me of why I felt so strongly against this act. So I thought to myself... Why don't I make dh watch this???? He has a penis... He should feel this pain.... So, I went to play the video for him. He agreed to watch it. I saw hime cringe at the procedure and stare at his peacefully nursing son. He got off the couch and asked my if "that" was legal. I said what? "That" is a circ... What do you mean? He then said, "they don't use anesthesia?" Bottom line was that he feels that being in the 21st century in America, there should be no reason for anyone (even an adult) to experience such pain. Now to the present. I have a beautiful son who has his foreskin. My husband was more convinced that everything would be fine after reading that intact care was easy. My inlaw's are a bit shocked but I just remind them that his penis belongs to him so lay off! My family on the other hand is totally for no circing. My Dad made a point of calling us everyday to check to see if our son was still intact! My husbands co-workers have sons and the majority of them are intact. My circle of friends son's are all intact."A Father Writes:"The doctors tried to convince me to cut my sons but I insisted that it would not be acceptable. Our children were born at home with a mid-wife so there was no pressure at the time of birth to perform the proceedure. Before me my wife had never even seen of one un cut and actually had no idea that the cut ones were made that way through cutting. What I never understood was that why is it bad to cut a female and not a male. In my own experience, the foreskin is very sensitive and adds loads of pleasure to sex. Why mess with nature. A nice clean, hygenic natural protector .... and people want to cut it off?! Eventually on a guy with foreskin it retracts and is pretty hard to tell the difference anyway."A Mother Writes:"It was easy to protect them because I stayed home and birthed them into a safe gentle environment. If we had had to go in, I had a birth plan that explicitly stated my baby was never to leave my sight, or be circumcised, and had someone done so I would have needed to be physically restrained from attacking them for assaulting my child. Tell your readers to put NO CIRC explicitly in their birthplans for the hospital. It should say I DO NOT CONSENT to circumcision."Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova is a Russian-born child birth educator who has made a movie(Birth as We Know It) about women birthing naturally -- the trailer of which can be viewed here on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZtYCHASqNMThis excerpt is from an interview she gave about the benefits of giving birth without trauma which can be viewed here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6587846126610753613

Description:

In the 1940s and 1950s circumcision became quite common. By the 1960s, 90 percent of all male newborns in the United States were being circumcised as routine procedure. Ten years later, however, opinion among doctors swung away from the belief that certain groups of women developed cancer of the cervix because their husbands were uncircumcised. It was concluded that the cause was actually lack of good male hygiene - which is not as much of a problem in this country as it is in some other parts of the world. Also, by the early 1970s, more physicians - though not all - were aware of the psychological harm that could come from circumcision after infancy, and circumcision of an older child was not suggested as frequently as in the past.Read his article on how he changed his mind here: http://www.doctorsopposingcircumcision.org/info/spock.htmlIn 1971 a task force of the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that there is no medical reason to recommend routine circumcision, and I voiced the same opinion in the 1976 revision of Baby and Child Care. I hoped that the controversy would then be settled once and for all. But today, there are again some physicians who favor routine circumcision because they are of the opinion (not substantiated by solid scientific proof) that circumcision will decrease, at least to a small degree, the risk of contracting various venereal diseases in adulthood. But many physicians, myself included, are unconvinced. One recent study did indicate that urinary tract infections in infancy, which is an uncommon disease in boys, does occur less frequently among circumcised boys, but this has not yet been confirmed by further studies. There is no doubt in medical circles that routine circumcision does prevent cancer of the penis, but this is a very rare disease which causes only approximately 150 deaths a year in the United States. Should one million baby boys be circumcised each year because of this small risk? Each parent must answer that question for him or herself. In view of the renewed controversy regarding circumcision, the American Academy of Pediatrics has again appointed a task force to reconsider its position on routine circumcision, although no final decision has yet been reached.Though the debate continues within the medical community, parents do have a few facts and various opinions on which to base their own decision on this matter. In earlier days many parents were not informed about what the issues were. The attending obstetrician or an intern or resident would appear at the mother's bedside a few days after delivery and say, ``Do you want the boy circumcised?'' or ``I suppose you want him to be circumcised,'' as if it were the only sensible choice. We now know that it is not the only choice, nor is it agreed that it is the most sensible choice. My own preference, if I had the good fortune to have another son, would be to leave his little penis alone.

Description:

Dr. Dean Edell discusses the misleading and unsound arguments in the current drive to circumcise Africa.

The tissue that connects these two surfaces dissolves naturally over time - a process that should never be hurried. The foreskin can be retracted when its inside fold separates from the glans and its opening widens. This usually happens by age 18. Even if the glans and foreskin separate by themselves in infancy, the foreskin still may not be retractable then because the opening of a baby's foreskin may be just large enough to allow for the passage of urine. The first person to retract a child's foreskin should be the child himself.A very young boy usually pulls his foreskin outward. This is normal and natural and no cause for concern; he won't hurt himself. Once a boy discovers that his foreskin is retractable (a wondrous discovery for an intact child), he can easily learn to care for himself. Telling your son about retractability beforehand will keep him from becoming alarmed the first time his foreskin retracts. When a boy is old enough to bathe himself, he can wash his penis when he washes the rest of himself. Simple instructions may be helpful.1. Gently slip your foreskin back (if it is retractable).2. Rinse your glans and the inside fold of your foreskin with warm water.3. Pat it dry if you like.4. Slip your foreskin forward, back in place over the glans. At puberty, you can let your son know that with hormonal activity comes new responsibility, including genital hygiene. FORESKIN RETRACTIONWhat is phimosis? The Greek word phimosis means muzzled and is used -- often incorrectly -- to refer to a foreskin that cannot be retracted (for whatever reason). A comprehensive discussion of phimosis is beyond the scope of this pamphlet. What parents should know is that almost all babies have non-retractable foreskins, that this is normal, and that the foreskins of most males become retractable by the time they are 18. It is also important to know that many adult males with non-retractable foreskins are perfectly happy with them that way. Adult males with non-retractable foreskins who would rather their foreskins were retractable can easily and safely stretch their foreskin opening until it is large enough to slip comfortably over their glans. A non-retractable foreskin is not, in itself, an indication for circumcision. What happens if someone retracts my son's foreskin prematurely?Forcing the foreskin back can be very painful and can cause problems.Tearing the foreskin from the glans leaves raw, open wounds, which can lead to infection.Raw surfaces on the foreskin and glans can heal together, forming adhesions.Small tears in the opening of the foreskin can heal to form non-elastic scar tissue, passibly causing acquired phimosis. The foreskin can get "stuck" behind the glans (paraphimosis). By squeezing the glans, the foreskin can be brought forward again, without circumcision. "The foreskin therefore can be likened to a rosebud which remains closed and muzzled. Like a rosebud it will only blossom when the time is right. No one opens a rosebud to make it blossom." - H. L. Tan, M.D.

American Circumcision - What's the big deal

Description:

An uncircumcised penis is easily cared for. It seems that the problems that people blame on foreskins actually stem from improper care of the uncircumcised penis. To quote the AAP, good personal hygiene would offer all the advantages of routine circumcision without the attendant surgical risk. Since the AAP gives no instruction in the matter, many doctors advise parents to force back the foreskin and clean underneath. Actually, the best mode of action is to leave it alone. A soak in a warm bath is all it needs during infancy. As the boy grows, the foreskin will naturally separate from the glans (somewhere between the ages of 3 and 13), and he may then pull it back and clean underneath it with clear water. The full process of separation is usually finished by age 18.Read this Dr Sears article on deciding about infant circumcision: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/1/T012000.aspCircumcision is not necessary to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can be treated with antibiotics or breastfeeding. Your doctor may have told you that circumcision is important for preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, UTIs are not serious enough to warrant preventive surgery. UTIs are easily treatable with antibiotics, and studies have shown that breastfeeding is a great for prevention as well as for treatment.UTIs are only slightly more common (about a 1 percent risk increase) among uncircumcised boys, about 1 in 100 will be affected. They can be prevented by proper hygiene and care of the foreskin and penis.Circumcisions role in reducing cancer rates is negligible, at best. Many studies have linked circumcision to lower rates of penile as well as cervical cancer. The incidence of penile cancer in America is about 1 in 100,000, usually occurring in older men.According to the AAFP, circumcision has only been shown to reduce the cancer risk by about .2%. Proper hygiene and safe sexual practices are believed to be the most important preventive tool for penile cancer. The American Cancer Society stated in 1996 that circumcision should not be performed to prevent cancer. The main causes of genital cancer are smoking, sex at an early age and unprotected sex with multiple partners.Studies showing that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting AIDS have not been duplicated in the United States. Circumcision has been shown to work miracles by reducing a mans risk of contracting AIDS in studies performed in Africa. If these studies are valid, how is it that America has both the highest circumcision rate of any western country and also the highest AIDS rate? More studies will be concluded in 2007, perhaps shedding some light on this apparent paradox. Circumcision has also been linked to reduced rates of ulcerative sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and genital herpes, but the AAFP states that good hygiene and safe sex could be just as effective. If a sexually active, adult male feels that his lifestyle choices warrant the procedure, he may decide to have it done when he is of legal age to make that decision.

Look just like Dad, by matching genitalia

Description:

Sons don't mind if they dont look like their fathers. Looking like Dad seems to be the most important reason to cut babies in America — but how similar is a tiny, prepubescent penis to Dads, anyway? Toddlers are smart. Try explaining that everyone is unique and body parts all look different. Tell him that Dad had to have an operation on his penis but now it is okay. After all, you already have to explain why Mom looks different, don't you? An Appeal to New Fathers: http://www.noharmm.org/appeal.htmCircumcision violates infants rights. Before deciding on circumcision you may want to consider your sons rights. An article published in Humane Health Care International explains that circumcision of infants is a violation of the seven principles of medical ethics. Following the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, the AAP Committee on Bioethics stated that parents have the right to grant permission for diagnosis and treatment, but they do not have the right to decide on elective procedures for their children. These should be postponed until the child is able to choose them for himself. The committee also mentions that parents rights to force religious practices that could be harmful to the child should be limited. In contrast, the AAP official policy statement allows the parents to make the decision. An uncircumcised penis is easily cared for. It seems that the problems that people blame on foreskins actually stem from improper care of the uncircumcised penis. To quote the AAP, good personal hygiene would offer all the advantages of routine circumcision without the attendant surgical risk.
Doctors Opposing Circumcision - HIV / AIDS

Description:

John V. Geisheker, J.D., LL.M., Executive Director for Doctors Opposing Circumcision discusses circumcision in Africa in relation to H.I.V.Why do/did you have foreskin?

Description:

Yes really, see here: http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/9712/23/circumcision.anesthetic/ Even if it could be performed with zero pain, that still leaves open the ethical discussion of removing a healthy body part without the consent of the person whose body it is, and the medical discussion of what the functions of natural genitalia are. This wasn't just with circumcision but with any procedure on hospitalized newborns, from preemies to babies up to 18 months of age, have been routinely operated upon without benefit of pain-killing anesthesia. This has been the practice for decades but was unknown to the general public until 1985 when some parents discovered that their seriously ill premature babies had suffered major surgery without anesthesia. Up to this time, babies were typically given a form of curare to paralyze their muscles for surgery, making it impossible for them to lift a finger or make a sound of protest! This is an excerpt from the PBS-broadcast film "Whose body? Whose rights?", which you can learn more about at http://www.circumcisionvideos.com

Description:

Just a quick reaction after watching the whole Penn & Teller's Circumcision Bullshit show. Here is a link to it that starts right after an ad: http://tinyurl.com/2bypo52Another example I came across while researching this topic: Yep, tomorrow is the day. Hopefully, I will get something good enough that I won't remember what's going on for a few days. Frankly, this is not something that I want to experience or remember. Update! The burning question: How much sensation did you lose? The burning answer: A WHOLE FREAKING LOT.If I had known I was going to lose as much sensitivity as I did, I would not have gotten circumsized until it was a last resort. The old saying about the palm of your hand vs. the back is an understatement- the nerve endings in my foreskin gave me a completely different dimension of sensation, but now it's gone. Crap.So there it is, people, proof from a cognizant person who knows the before and after: Circumcision DEFINATELY reduces the amount of sensation in your penis by an large amount- maybe even half. It's not a percentage, nor is it accurate to say half- it's a whole different set of sensations that complement and add to sexual pleasure. I'm sorry for all you guys who never got to know that sensation- it's FAR superior to what I have now.Penis, I'm sorry. I'll never forget the time we had together with our foreskin. RIP Foreskin Much later update! It's been 110-ish days since the operation, so here's a long-term update for you. I think that anything that will happen has happened by now, so this should be the last one. First off, let me say this- being circumcised was the worst decision of my life, and I can never go back on it. As far as physical changes go: I still have ugly stitch marks that haven't faded at all. They sting occasionally when that skin-penis joint it being pulled on. This is one thing that I hope goes away, but I've seen no improvement recently; so if it does happen, it won't be for a long time. My glans is fully 'roughened' now. Let's say this about loss of feeling. If you call what I had pre-surgery as normal, then what I have now feels like I'm humping a bowl of pudding. It's really that drastic. I don't know if it's a screwup during stitching but what's left of my frenulum is... exposed now. I can't think of a good way to put it, but it's just kind of stickign out in a way that you wouldn't expect it to be. Now, I'm not exactly an expert on what the underside of a penis should look like, but what I've got seems rather out of place. Other effects: Huge decrease in libido. Seriously. Motivation is still there, but it's nothing like before. Frequency of erections is the same, but intensity and sensation are decreased markedly.

Description:

"Medicalized circumcision began during the 1800s to prevent masturbation, which was believed to cause disease." - nocirc.orgMale Circumcision has not been viewed as a medical necessity for over 30 years, yet there is a taboo around pubic debate over the procedure (which happens to be the #1 most common operation performed in the United States). Not one single president in the past 30 years has given this outdated barbarous practice any attention. This subject needs to be addressed from the point of view of the average person of childbearing age. Medical professionals can continue arguing, but since practically no medical organization on this planet considers circumcision necessary it must become a serious topic for debate. It has been a widespread unquestioned case of Ritualistic Sacrifice in our Society for far too long!Only 20% of males on the planet are circumcised. In our country circumcised males are the majority, but we are the minority worldwide... WHY?1999 American Academy of Pediatrics, Circumcision Policy Statement: "Existing scientific evidence... [is] not sufficient to recommend routine neonatal circumcision."

Parental Decisions: Infant Circumcision

Description:

Isn't circumcision just a little snip?In a typical infant boy, the foreskin is a double-sided sleeve of skin and soft mucosal tissue that completely encloses the glans (the head of the penis). It is actually physically bonded to the infant's glans. This skin contains thousands of blood vessels and specialized nerves. In an adult, it would grow to cover 12-15 square inches. Circumcision removes this part of the penis. The operator forces a metal clamp inside the foreskin, and tears the skin away from the glans. The operator then slices the foreskin down past the glans and cuts the foreskin off. The entire procedure is excruciatingly painful. Infant circumcision is performed without adequate anesthesia, since anesthetizing such a young infant can be very dangerous. Partial or complete amputation of the penis sometimes occurs. Some children even die from the trauma, hemorrhage, or other complications. What is the value of the foreskin? The foreskin has protective, sensory, biomechanical, and immunological functions. Throughout life, the outer part of the foreskin protects the sensitive inner part of the foreskin and the glans from injury, abrasion, chafing, and infection. The foreskin keeps its mucosal tissue and the glans soft and moist so that it maintains sensitivity. During sexual activity, the foreskin glides up and down over the glans, providing sensation from thousands of specialized nerve endings in the inner foreskin. Parts of the foreskin, including the frenulum (a narrow membrane on the underside of the foreskin) and the ridged band (the edge of the foreskin, between the inner and outer skin), are particularly important in sexual function. See the Circumcision Information Resource Center, under "Foreskin sexual function." Circumcision removes most of the inner and outer foreskin, and destroys these functions. The foreskin secretes immunological substances that fight infection, called lysozymes, and also produces natural lubricants, reducing the need for artificial lubricants during sex. The presence of the foreskin can enhance the sexual experience for both partners. Polls of women who had experienced both circumcised and uncircumcised partners indicated a strong preference for the latter, with longer duration of coitus and higher rate of orgasm cited as the main reasons (for example, see "The effect of male circumcision on the sexual enjoyment of the female partner").Isn't female circumcision worse than male circumcision?Female circumcision is typically viewed as more horrific than male circumcision because it is usually done under unhygienic conditions rather than in a hospital, and because one form of female circumcision, infibulation, is particularly severe. However, both male and female circumcisions are classed as genital mutilation by the International Coalition for Genital Integrity. Both forms of circumcision remove functional, normal tissue, cause extreme pain, permanently disfigure the genitals, and permanently damage the sexual response. And in most cultures where female circumcision is performed, male circumcision is also performed with equally unhygienic instruments. Regardless of the child's gender, when done to infants or children, unnecessary genital surgeries violate human rights because they are amputations performed without medical need and without the individual's consent. The World Health Organization recognizes three types of female circumcision. Type I removes the clitoral hood and/or the clitoral tip. Type II removes the clitoral hood, clitoris, and part or all of the labia. Type III, also known as infibulation or pharaonic circumcision, involves removal of all external female genitalia and suturing of the vaginal opening.Male circumcision can be compared to type I or II female circumcision. Although the glans is not harmed at the time of circumcision, the loss of protective structures causes it to dry out and lose sensitivity over time. It is also important to note that most of the nerves and pleasure receptors present in the clitoris are, in the male, present in the foreskin and its associated structure, the frenulum. Removal of these nerves constitutes a loss that can be most adequately compared to a partial clitoridectomy.

Description:

This wasn't an easy decision in my house when I found out I was having a boy. I gave birth in March. In January, we "accidentally" discovered we were having a boy. We're a blended family, and daddy already had two girls, and I have one son. He had never had to decide whether to circumcise before; I had. A few weeks after reading this joyous news (boys sure are nice!), the circumcision decision came into the picture. We always knew we had a 50/50 chance of a boy, and therefore discuss circumcision. But until we knew E was a baby boy, it was something we'd face later. I think Daddy assumed I'd go with his wishes because Heck! Dad's a boy! My son's a boy! Dad knows best! And I think that may be the assumption of many men. For many women, as well. They let it happen because "daddy wants it done."But I'd given birth to and raised a son for a couple years on my own. And circumcision absolutely never entered my mind for him. My nephews aren't circumcised. Neither are over 40% of boys born today. That didn't convince daddy. Honestly, while sparing a bit of our privacy, I will say that this argument was a tearful one.Dad believed what many dads believe: that he'll be made fun of, he'll look "different" in the locker room, he wouldn't "look like me," he'd be at risk for infections. These are all common beliefs. And from experience, it's difficult to come up with the counterpoint to the "look like me" statement, because when you do, your partner may feel that you don't like the way he looks. It's a very personal and understandable feeling for men in a culture obsessed with virility. But I was the mama, growing a tiny baby boy inside of me, and protecting him was instinctual from conception. If this is a hot topic for debate in your house and you are as adamant as I was that your son remain intact, use some of these points:* Your son will never "look like you" in every way. Would we get him rhinoplasty, too?* Boys rarely see their fathers' penises past a young age, and no matter what, grown men's penises look very different in size and hair content from their baby boys'.* Your husband's mother made the decision to circumcise her son in a culture very different from ours. Would you also choose not to breastfeed if she did not?* It is not your body. This is a huge reason to leave your son intact. It is his body, and he should be allowed to choose whether to have surgery on his most private parts.* Trauma. Labor and delivery is a harrowing feat for many mothers. Just imagine how tough it is for the baby. Do you really think it's necessary to subject him to two major events, one of them simply for aesthetics, in the same day?* Locker room fears: if 40% of boys are now left intact (and more in some places), your son won't look much different than others in the locker room. And anyhow, why would boys be checking each other out in the first place?! (It'd be the one poking fun with the real problem.)* Would you do this to your daughter? On the supposed medical reasons:* Increased risk for urinary tract infections: UTIs are rare in boys, much less common than for girls. Recent studies suggest there is no difference in the amount for circumcised boys than for intact boys.* STDs: Some of the studies suggesting that the risk for HIV is lessened are flawed, in that they concentrate on populations in Africa, where HIV rates are much higher. A 2007 study offers that it is the percentage of female sex workers in the female population, not the incidence of male circumcision, that determines the level of HIV infection* Phimosis, or a foreskin that won't retract: The foreskin gradually becomes retractable between infancy and 18 years of age. It's nothing we should either rush or worry about. In fact, only 1 percent of males over 18 still have an unretracted foreskin, and then it can be easily treated with a topical steroid cream. The risks of this happening, however, are small, because stimulation of the foreskin during adolescence helps this happen naturally. (and that's something that no adolescent boy minds doing!)Medical "reasons" are simply not compelling enough.Would we rid ourselves of anything else not "necessary"? Heck, at $400 a pop, could they take off those pinkie toes, too? Toss in an appendectomy?Any medical professional would think you were crazy for suggesting either. So why not with this piece of skin, this bundle of nerves? On a newborn boy?If it is truly "preventative" surgery, we would be removing the breast buds of any young girl who has a high risk for breast cancer. We would be removing the appendix at birth. But we're not, because those are drastic steps to take for problems that may never occur. And we, as a culture, refuse to perform such drastic surgery on children without their consent, we should not be performing what is essentially plastic surgery on infants.
